Initially volunteering with Arundel Rivers Federation for collecting turbidity data around the 3 rivers,
we started to brainstorm ideas for improving the process.
Jeff, expert in laser and optics drafted a few ideas and searched for inexpensive sensors for building cost-efficient permanent points of measure.
Together with Stuart, they decided to build a prototype.
Francois, who just retired, decided to help with his expertise in software.
And then Trevor, motivated by the nature/depollution orientation of the project completed the team with his expertise in Mechatronics and 3D printing.
The team is built; the project is named TOES - for Turbidity Opto-Electronic Sensor.
The target is fixed: real time data available in cloud, minimal cost per point of measure, and worry-free of maintenance
A name is chosen: West River Instruments - (who knowns what can come next after this project ... :))
We are building prototypes, evaluating the data, communicating it to the cloud, and building a database with a webapp to display the results.
From our ongoing testing, the focus remains on:
The sensors: improve the accuracy of direct and diffracted beams.
The probe: suppress algae buildup in order to avoid the need for maintenance
The box: the communication stability with the probe needs improvement.
The Cloud: consolidation of monitoring tools, and result display
